Somali media plays a vital role in the country’s fractured political atmosphere. The public, which receives its information mainly through radio, has demonstrated a desire to listen to neutral and well-balanced programming. But the country lacked a consistent source of independent information. Relief International designed a training program for 60 journalists in Somalia’s Puntland State that focused on objective reporting and journalistic ethics. Through local partners, Relief International built the state’s first media resource and training center, provisioned with materials and equipment that offered Somalia journalists hands-on experience. The program also aimed to improve media regulations and increase freedom of opinion and expression.
