Celebrating Inclusion on World Labor Day in Türkiye

Relief International teams in Türkiye marked World Labour Day earlier this week, but their commitment to recognizing the efforts and contributions of all workers extends far beyond a single day.

On World Labour Day, and every day, the team is deeply committed to building a more inclusive future for all workers and ensuring that individuals with disabilities, whom we support, have equal opportunities in the workforce.

As part of this commitment, it is crucial to understand the additional hurdles faced by people with disabilities when it comes to finding and keeping a job. These challenges can range from physical barriers, that make workplaces inaccessible, to negative societal attitudes about the capabilities of people with disabilities.

Our teams in Türkiye ensure that understanding the lived experiences and supporting workers with disabilities is at the core of our programming, as seen in our work with Ahmad, a young man from Syria, who tragically lost both of his legs in a bomb blast while working in the fields with his family. “I didn’t want to use a wheelchair or walking sticks. When I arrived at the Relief International prosthetics center, I was thrilled to learn that I could receive prosthetic limbs.”

Through Relief International’s support, Ahmad was provided with prosthetic limbs that not only restored his mobility but allowed him to continue working and embrace life again.

“I am very happy when I go to the field with my prostheses. I can ride a tractor and go anywhere I want. I stay in Türkiye for the Relief International rehabilitation center as they provide me with long-term support whenever I encounter a problem with the prostheses.”

Aishe, 20, found the courage to pursue her passion for painting with the encouragement of Relief International’s programs. Before the Syrian revolution, she lived happily with her family until the turmoil devastated their lives. “I lost my father and 5 members of my family including brothers, uncles, and cousins who were tortured and killed by the Syrian regime.”

Despite facing adversity, Aishe persevered. “I experienced displacement and instability, but still, I gathered my strength and returned to school. My hobby was drawing. I loved it very much, as I hoped to become an artist.”

“I experienced displacement and instability, but still, I gathered my strength and returned to school. My hobby was drawing. I loved it very much, as I hoped to become an artist.”

However, Aishe’s life took another tragic turn after resettling in Türkiye when the devastating earthquake struck, leaving her trapped beneath the rubble of her collapsed home. “I remained under the rubble for ten hours until my family managed to take me out. Unfortunately, all my body parts completely malfunctioned, and I lost my right foot.”

After nine months in the hospital, undergoing medical, physical, and psychological treatment, Relief International provided Aishe with rehabilitation support, including Mental Health and Psychosocial Support (MHPSS) where she found renewed motivation to pursue her passion. Eventually, she turned her talent into an income-generating opportunity. Aishe’s story reflects the transformative power of providing support and opportunities to individuals with disabilities, enabling them to unlock their full potential.

Through tailored support, we’ve witnessed how services rooted in compassion and empathy can support individuals like Ahmad and Aishe to contribute meaningfully to their communities and live fulfilling lives.

Our support extends beyond the realm of work. The team in Türkiye is committed to ensuring that individuals with disabilities have access to education, transportation, and all aspects of daily life. On World Labor Day, and every day, we advocate for a society where everyone, regardless of ability, is valued and empowered.

Through a series of engaging events, meetings, and training sessions, we’ve successfully reached thousands of individuals, spreading awareness about the significance of inclusion education and its vital role in fostering a more equitable society.

Together, we are breaking down barriers and creating a world where everyone has the opportunity to thrive and contribute.
