Samar’s Path to Hope and Healing

Gender-based violence (GBV) affects millions of women and girls worldwide, with nearly 1 in 3 women experiencing physical or sexual violence in their lifetime (UN, 2024) In crisis and conflict zones, these risks are further intensified, as instability and displacement leave women and girls particularly vulnerable to abuse and exploitation.

Samar, a 25-year-old mother of four, has faced incredible hardship, yet her story is rich in resilience and hope. During her marriage, she endured years of emotional and psychological abuse and was denied basic resources. Eventually, she was abandoned by her husband—left without financial support or the means to care for herself and her children.

Determined to provide for her family against all odds, she searched tirelessly for work. However, living in a rural area with limited opportunities for women left her unable to meet her children’s basic needs, leaving her feeling increasingly hopeless.

When Samar learned about Relief International’s services from a neighbor, she decided to seek help. She visited one of their facilities in Syria, emotionally drained and struggling to find a way forward for herself and her children.

At the center, a social worker welcomed Samar and after determining what support she needed, referred her to the psychosocial support team. Through their guidance, Samar learned strategies to manage her stress and was introduced to life skills services. She expressed an interest in sewing, so Relief International connected her with training that gave her new skills and a sense of direction.

Relief International also referred Samar to the cash assistance program. With this support, she was able to purchase a sewing machine, essential groceries, and heating fuel. She also bought winter clothing for her children and covered their school admission costs. For the first time in years, Samar felt relief and pride as she watched her children return to school and thrive in their education.

The psychosocial support Samar received helped her rebuild her confidence and resilience, improving her emotional well-being. The sewing machine became a symbol of her progress, enabling her to start earning an income doing work she enjoyed.

“I feel strong and willing to stand on my own. I am eager to help other women who are going through gender-based violence.”

Relief International helped Samar with the support she needed to create a stable environment for her children, but it was Samar’s inherent determination and strength that transformed her future.

Samar’s story reminds us of the importance of truly listening to survivors and addressing their needs. By doing so, we can help more women like Samar build futures defined by safety and freedom.
