Kashif Shafique, Relief International Country Director in Sudan speaks on the rapidly deteriorating situation in North Darfur and El Fasher because of increased conflict in the region.
“Today in North Darfur, there is serious fighting and widespread bloodshed. Attacks have intensified, targeting urban areas, including schools, hospitals and settlements for displaced people. It is tragic.”
“Currently, over one million local residents and around 600,000 internally displaced people are at risk, with many fleeing into the open deserts seeking safety without a clear destination as food and water supplies dwindle. Every day, 30-50 people are dying due to these attacks, and the looming threat of famine is becoming a reality.”
“A number of health facilities are inaccessible and trauma care supplies are running short. We are concerned about the safety of our team and are working hard to support and communicate with them. We are doing everything we can to ensure their safety while continuing to provide life-saving support for communities amidst these extremely dire circumstances.”
“We anticipate attacks will increase, and the conflict coupled with hunger will result in more deaths. We must act now. We are calling again for a ceasefire to be agreed with immediate effect, and for funding and support to be scaled up urgently to extend a lifeline to the people in El Fasher and across the region who are experiencing this abject horror. We cannot forget the people of Sudan.”
