Improving Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH), Azraq Camp

The Azraq refugee camp was opened in April 2014 to help relieve pressure being put on Jordan’s Za’atari refugee camp by the rapid influx of Syrian refugees. In three of the camp’s villages — each housing 10,000 to 15,000 refugees — RI distributed essential non-food items and household goods, and promoted proper hygiene practices through hygiene awareness education. RI also conducted in-home hygiene awareness sessions, focus group discussions, and hygiene promotion at schools and community centers throughout the camp. Thirty-two Syrian community mobilizers were also selected and trained to promote awareness among camp residents. Promoting health and proper hygiene practices curbs the spread of waterborne diseases by minimizing risky practices in close quarters.
